Every December since 1954, the editors of Sports Illustrated have chosen a Sportsperson of the Year: the athlete or team who best exemplifies the ideals of achievement and sportsmanship.

After winning 58 games in the regular season, they went on to complete the first Finals sweep in 11 years, clinching their third title in four years by beating the Cleveland Cavaliers and establishing themselves as a dynasty.

With Lewis Hamilton vying for a fifth Formula 1 world title, England's highest Test run-scorer Alastair Cook ending his international career with a century, Lizzy Yarnold's successful defence of her Winter Olympic skeleton title and Europe's victory to regain the Ryder Cup from the United States, this year's awards could be the most competitive yet. Nominations are already open for this award. The Warriors' 2018 NBA title—the team's third in four years—solidified their status as a modern dynasty.

Our honorees—from our first, Roger Bannister, through the likes of Ali, Bill Russell, Arthur Ashe, the Miracle on Ice team, the 1999 U.S. women's national team, Michael Phelps, LeBron James, and last year’s Houston Strong tandem of J.J. Watt and Jose Altuve—comprise one of the most exclusive clubs in sports and in American culture.
