Ezekiel understood that he was seeing the “likeness” of things, not the reality. The Vision: God on the Cherubim. When I saw it, I fell facedown,(AO) and I heard the voice of one speaking.

This places Ezekiel in Babylonian exile a little after 600BC. The center of the fire looked like glowing metal,(J) 5 and in the fire was what looked like four living creatures. The first part of Ezekiel’s vision of God is his description of the Cherubim(The living creatures), which are in the presence of God, the Glory of the Lord. Origen asks the question: “What could be more glorious and exalted than these things?”  The answer: the fullness of heavenly glory.

Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, without turning as they went. Then comes the wheels, lined with eyes all around, one seemingly within the other, each encircled with fire, before the living creatures.

Ezekiel describes these wheels, Ezekiel describes a firmament above the creatures, and he describes the creatures’ wings. Well, even though he had not yet descended into time, the Fathers believed that Ezekiel saw a sort of future glimpse into the person of Christ. But centuries later, the Fathers of the Church saw it plainly. “For a life lived without any offense is a rounded life, whatever the sufferings in which it is lived, and even within such it runs like a wheel. Gregory the Great also notes that the chariot is a sort of symbol of the saints here on earth who are led and guided by Holy Scripture. John expounds his princely and mighty and glorious birth from the Father, saying “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God,” and “All things were made by him, and without him was nothing made.”  Therefore this Gospel is deserving of all confidence, for such indeed is his person.
